NY Advocates Push for Speed Limit Reductions for Fourth Year

Dan Langenkamp is a life-long cyclist and a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department. In August 2022, his wife, Sarah Debbink Langenkamp, was killed while cycling in a bike lane by the driver of a semi truck in Bethesda, MD, just weeks after their family had returned to the United States from a tour in Ukraine, helping the country fight Russia’s invasion. Dan now also serves on the Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s Board of Directors.

Kristy Daphnis is a Co-Founder and Steering Committee Member for the Montgomery County chapter of Families for Safe Streets, which aims to provide support, community, and advocacy opportunities for families and friends of traffic crash victims. In 2011, her child&#8217;s caregiver, Etsegenet Hurissa, was killed by a speeding driver while she attempted to cross Georgia Avenue in Aspen Hill, MD. Since that incident, Kristy has been an avid advocate for safe streets in Montgomery County, across the State of Maryland, and beyond.

Christy Kwan is the volunteer co-chair and member of the DC chapter of Families for Safe Streets, which confronts traffic violence in DC through advocacy and peer support. Christy&#8217;s cousin, Jamie Lai, was killed 22 years ago in a crash. Today Christy volunteers to organize families and survivors so that no other families suffer the loss or life altering injuries that have physically, emotionally, and spiritually impacted our communities.
